Current issue

In this issue of SPLQ we have chosen to focus on the public library as a meeting place. For quite some time the public libraries have been busy adapting themselves to rapidly developing new technologies. Automation, production and dissemination of digital services have been the order of the day, but it has now become apparent that we need to examine the physical library in more detail. How to design it in such a way as to fulfil the vision of the hybrid library that embraces both traditional materials and digital dissemination – and how important is the social aspect? “People need people” – computers are indispensable, but they are not human.

The articles this time describe the social role of the public library in relation to selected target groups: Children and the young, students, ethnic minorities and citizens in a local community.
