Music Library as a work of art
By invitation from Odense Music Library and with financial support from the Danish National Library Authority, the art group van Gogh has over the past year created a Vision for the music library of the future.

The Vision chooses as its starting point a re-defining of the concept of public service, and the proposed solution is developed specifically for Odense Music Library, which houses the largest music collection for public use in Scandinavia. The Library is centrally placed in Odense, the third largest city in Denmark, next to the exhibition space for modern art Kunsthallen Brandts Klædefabrik.

“The art group van Gogh has created a fascinating vision for Odense Music Library which over the next two-three years will be able to transform the library into a coherent compositional work with everything that could possibly be imagined in relation to symphonies between interior design, website, logo, lighting, signs and innovative mediation projects. The library has been recreated on the basis of four formulated ‘intonations’: Sensualism, Bildung, Curiosity and Dialogue. The result is a profusion of creative ideas”.

Information, 26. January 2005.

Public Service is an altogether brilliant re-launching of Odense Music Library with i.a. concert hall and sound studio.”

Dansk Musiktidsskrift, January 2005.

In the words of van Gogh:

“The composition concept is also the awareness that everything is experienced in relation to something else and forms part of a greater whole. In this way all elements are charged with impact – which in the meeting with the user will strengthen and tune up his attention.”

Evaluation of The Reflexive Learning Environment

Development of learning environments at Nordfyns Gymnasium in collaboration with Otterup Public Library was evaluated by Birgitte Gottlieb in 2003; but as all the means granted by the Development Pool for Public and School Libraries had not been spent during the original project period, an extension of the period was allocated. This year (2003-2004) has been evaluated by consultant Peter Gorm Larsen, MA (Political Science) who sees the project as a forerunner of the new Danish grammar school reform and concludes that the project has lived up to the original intentions, and in chapter five he presents a number of recommendations for the work with the study and information competencies of the pupils.
